State and county marriage requirements often change. Verify information with your county clerks office before making wedding or travel plans. Information listed below is only a guideline.

Applying for a Marriage License in Georgia

  • Requirements may vary as each county in Georgia can have their own requirements based on the Judge in that area. Check with the Probate court of your county regarding cost and requirements for your marriage license.
  • Apply for your marriage license in the county where the wedding will be performed.
  • You will need two valid forms of ID, such as drivers license, birth certificate, U.S. passport, Armed Forces ID card.
  • Some counties require a copy of your divorce decree.
  • As of July 1, 2003 blood tests are no longer required in the State of Georgia.
  • Once you have your marriage license, there is no waiting period.


Cobb County: A Free Marital Workshop

FOCUS ON FOREVER is a marital workshop developed by the Superior and Probate Courts of Cobb County. It is a skill-based non-religious workshop designed for engaged and newlywed couples. The workshop is designed to address issues concerning communication and listening skills, anger management, and financial planning. Name Change Information

In about 10 days, request a copy of your signed marriage license back from the registrar. Include $5 (check your county to be sure), for each certified copy requested. Prior to receiving your certificate in the mail, you can change your name on utility bills, subscriptions, doctors, dentists, When you have your marriage license in hand, you can register with the DMV and the social security office. 1 (800) 772-1213 or http://www.socialsecurity.gov/atlanta/ to locate the office nearest you. New Social Sercurity cards are free.

Changing your drivers license
Take a copy of your certified marriage certificate and your new Social Security card to the Department of Motor Vehicles. http://www.dds.ga.gov/

Now you are ready to change your name on health and life insurance policies, deeds, titles, bank, airlines for frequent flyer miles, loans, credit cards, passports.

No need to change your name with the IRS, they can always find you. Social Security office notifies them of your new name.

Note: Honeymoon reservations should be made in your maiden name.
